Helping You Build a Solid Foundation for Classical Education

Golden Foundations Homeschool Enrichment Program

  • Biblical Foundations

We will read from the gospels and Psalms together and will include copywork, memorization, and discussion.

  • Language Arts

We will focus on grammar and writing skills, using the excellent curriculum resources from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)—Story and Structure and Fix It Grammar workbooks.

  • Great Literature, Read-Alouds, Tea Time, Poetry, and More

We take a Charlotte Mason inspired approach to learning, focusing on reading classic and living books aloud together, discussion, as well as peaceful tea times where we enjoy a poetry selection of the day. We will engage history and geography through the Story of the World curriculum. Students will also have opportunities to roam and play freely outside, taking advantage of our large and fun-filled yard.

  • Some examples of books we would read together are:

    • My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves (Jean Craighead George)

    • The One and Only Ivan (Katherine Applegate)

    • Bridge to Terabithia (Katherine Paterson)

    • The Hatchet (Gary Paulsen)

    • The Hobbit (JRR Tolkien)

    • The War That Saved My Life (Kimberly Brubaker Bradley)

    • The Sign of the Beaver and The Bronze Bow (Elizabeth George Speare)

    • A Night Divided (Jennifer Nielsen)

  • Our philosophy is to make the most of each day through engaging and meaningful experiences. We are intentional in creating a learning environment where curiosity is nurtured, connections are made, and rich dialogue is had. We hope to help the children connect deeply with truth, beauty, and our Creator. We find that focusing on living books and time in Nature make this natural.

We value the Charlotte Mason and Classical model, where essentially we believe in life long learning, strong literature and learning for understanding rather than a completion of checklist.

  • For Biblical Foundations, we will simply read selections, often from the gospels or Psalms. We will also source our copywork and memorization from these texts.

For writing and grammar, we will use the Institute for Excellence in Writing workbooks including Story and Structure and Fix It Grammar.

For history and geography, we will use the Story of the World curriculum.

  • Ages 10-13 (approximately 5th and 6th grades)

Have a child or siblings just outside this range? Reach out to us. The age range is open to discussion.

  • Please keep your child home if they have:

    • Fever of 100.4 or higher within 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication)

    • Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours

    • Persistent coughing or difficulty breathing

    • Contagious illnesses such as strep throat, pink eye, flu, covid (until cleared by doctor or after 24 hours of antibiotics)

    • Unexplained rash or open sores

    • Head lice or nits (must be fully treated and cleared before returning)

If your child becomes ill during the day, we will contact you as soon as possible.

Thank you for following this policy to help protect the health and wellness of everyone attending.

  • We understand that sending your child to a home-based program is a matter of trust, and we take that responsibility seriously.

We maintain a high standard for safety and supervision.

    1. There will be at least two adults present during enrichment days, and children will not be left alone . Our program will be a maximum of 10 students to ensure a low child to adult ratio.

    2. Outdoor safety: When exploring nature or spending time outdoors, we will review boundaries and expectations with the students. We encourage all parents to provide your child with proper footwear, bug spray or sunscreen. Jenny is a Registered Nurse and First Aid and CPR trainer. We will have a first aid kit on hand.

    3. Nature is a big part of our program. The students will be taught to identify and avoid common outdoor hazards such as thorny vines, poison ivy, respecting wildlife, stinging insects, and the like.

    4. Outdoor play equipment. The kids will be excited to find out we have a small zip line and low ninja course for their free play time. Children will be shown how to use equipment properly.

    5. In home safety: Only common living spaces will be accessible, and we have basic emergency supplies on hand.

    6. Bullying: We don’t expect this will be an issue, but we foster a culture of kindness and respect. Bullying or inappropriate behavior is addressed immediately and will work with families to support a positive social environment.

  • You will need to buy a minimum of four books—the two IEW course workbooks that are chosen (Story and Structure and Fix It Grammar), as well as Story of the World text and workbook.

In addition, your student will want to bring a binder with dividers/tabs to keep any written work from each segment.

The only other thing your child is required to bring is a packed lunch / snacks and water bottle and a great attitude.

  • For IEW (Story and Structure and Fix It Grammar), we will plan to do Day 1 of each week’s work when we meet on Tuesdays (the curriculum is divided into days’ worth of work for each week). If you can complete the other days between Wednesday and the next Tuesday, that is ideal.

The same goes for Story of the World (also divided up into weeks’ and days’ worth of work).

The writing component (Story and Structure) is the most difficult and time consuming for most students. Fix It Grammar and Story of the World are typically less so.

Other than that, simply supporting your student in any additional assignments (memory work, reading or homework questions for discussion) is sufficient. We can easily keep you updated week to week with such things via group messages on the Band app.

Our goal is to provide a sufficient structure to help and enrich and support your student’s real learning, without being unnecessarily burdensome or difficult.

  • We use the Band app for group messages, updates, and photos to keep you updated with what we’re doing.
